The first tourists
Historians place the presence of the first occupants one century before JC. The Ligurians, the transalpine people who dominated the western extremity of the known world at the time, settled on a promontory, the present-day Suquet, and erected an oppidum or fortified camp there. No archaeological remains attest to the occupation of the site by the Ligurians, the barbarians as the Greek geographer Strabo later called them. Let’s look towards the sea to find traces of these first tourists.

By plane

Shuttles run from the airport to Cannes in about 45 minutes (via the highway):
Departure from the airport at 8:00 am and 9:00 am, then every ½ hour until 7:00 pm then at 8:00 pm – (by the seaside only in summer) at 8:45 pm and 9:55 pm.

The Cannes-Mandelieu airport has for affectation the general aviation of tourism and business. The economic and tourist vitality of the region has positioned Cannes-Mandelieu in the second place of business aviation airports after Paris-Le Bourget. Located 15 minutes from downtown Cannes and the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès de Cannes, the airport is the privileged tool to link the city directly to major European cities.

By Road

Cannes is connected to the main European cities. The city is connected by the A8 freeway “La Provençale” (exit N°42 Cannes La Bocca or Mougins/Cannes), from Aix en Provence in the West to Italy in the East.

Some examples of distances in kilometers: Paris 950 km – Milan 320 km – Geneva 630 km – Barcelona 670 km – Rome 710 km – Munich 810 km – Brussels 1220 km – Amsterdam 1400 km.

The Route Napoléon (N85), which starts in Golfe Juan and ends in Grenoble, retraces the historical route taken by Napoléon on his return from Elba in 1815.

By train

The city of Cannes is widely served by TGV, Corail and express trains which link it to all the French regions and to the largest cities in Europe. This mode of transport will allow you to discover spectacular landscapes by the sea at the foot of the Esterel massif with its steep red rocks www.oui.sncf

Some examples of journey times: Cannes/Toulon: 1h15 – Cannes/Marseille: 2h – Cannes/Aix en Provence: 3h15 – Cannes/Lyon: 4h and Cannes/Paris: 5h15.

The TER (regional express train) allows you to cover the entire region from Les Arcs Draguignan to Ventimiglia, passing through Antibes, Biot, Cagnes sur mer, Nice and Villefranche sur Mer.

TER trains provide regular connections from all the towns on the Côte d’Azur to Cannes and Cannes-La-Bocca stations.
